About artBRAIN

Hi, I’m Lauren Poutawera, the creator of artBRAIN

Creativity is very much an emotive thing and negative thoughts shrink your creative brain! In my courses, alongside learning technical art skills, children will learn about creating a positive creative mindset. I will teach them how to draw inspiration from the world around them and how to create their own style and creative super powers!

MY VISION:
To change how we prioritise creativity in our lives! We live in a world of too much screen time, too much stimulation - with so much easy entertainment at our fingertips. There are many studies out there confirming how beneficial having a creative outlet is for our mental and emotional well being. I want to give the children I teach the gift to express themselves creatively... so that when we tell them to get off their screens or to entertain themselves they can escape into their own private creative world… where all that is needed is pencil and paper!

I believe that being creative, being able to think outside the box and being adaptable, are going to be the key elements that our children will need to stand out in this fast paced, compeditive and ever changing world!

MY PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: Running and teaching artBRAIN Creativity Programmes | Teaching Art In Schools | Marketing & Communications Manager | Business Owner | Art Director | Graphic Designer | Bachelor of Design, Massey University Wellington, Honours Degree in Visual Communications, majoring in Advertising.

ABOUT ME AND WHY I HAVE CREATED artBRAIN:
I am a mum of 3 young awesome children. We’ve been living back in New Zealand for over 3 years now and have recently moved back to our home town of Wellington after 2 years of living in Auckland. Before that we spent 5 years living in Dubai and traveling the world with our children.

As a creative child growing up I was enrolled in loads of art classes and holiday programmes. I did art all through secondary school followed by a Bacholor of Design degree in Visual Communications at University. What I have felt was always missing were step by step instructions teaching me technical art skills.

There is a common misconception that being artisitic or creative is some sort of gift/talent that you either have or don't have and that when you are creative or good at art, you are just expected to know how to do everything. We don’t apply this method of teaching to any other sport, subject or activity! So why do we do it with art and creativity? Art and creativity can and should totally be taught!

I want to give my students the skills to be able to express what is in their heads. I want them to be able to illustrate their ideas, stories and projects with confidence!
